ABOUT THE DISTRICT: Washakie County Conservation District is one of 34 Conservation District in Wyoming. Conservation Districts are local units of government established under state law (11-16-101 et. Seq.) to carry out natural resource management programs at the local level. We work with landowners, counties, cities, towns, and other community organizations to educate and conserve land and water resources on private and public lands in Washakie County.
POSITION SUMMARY: We are seeking an enthusiastic, passionate, and self-motivated educator to inspire and teach our community and youth about natural resources and agriculture through a variety of mediums. The Education & Program Coordinator organizes and presents conservation education programs, classroom and outdoor activities, workshops, and adult educational programming. This could include scheduling and arranging tours, field days, community displays, demonstrations and/or meetings for groups interested in natural resources conservation. Topics may include, but are not limited to water quality, wildlife, vegetation, recycling, irrigation water management, soil moisture technology, range management, soils, weeds, composting, tree planting, pollination, energy, and bats.
REQUIREMENTS, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of agricultural practices and/or natural resource experience through education and/or work is preferred.
- Communication, organizational and time management skills, focus driven, ability to multi- task and work independently.
- Excellent interpersonal, written, oral communication and public speaking skills in small and large settings. Ability to develop and maintain professional working relationships with several agencies.
- Ability to work in a standard office setting, as well as an outdoor field environment.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office programs, Google Drive, teleconferencing platforms, and cloud-based services. Ability to operate a variety of standard office equipment including computers and audio visual equipment. Experience in ARCGIS a plus.
- Willingness to learn and advance education through training seminars, workshops, and meetings.
- For job related travel, the ability to be away from home occasionally, possibly overnight, and for longer than normal workdays.
- Certified or interested in obtaining certification in AG Education, Project Learning Tree, Project Wet, Project Wild, or other education development.
- Proficient in English (oral and written), and ability to prepare written reports and grant proposals, when applicable.
- Possess a valid driver’s license and clean driving record, and pass background check.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES: The job responsibilities listed below are representative of the position but are not inclusive and can be adjusted based on district needs.
Education Programs
- Develop, coordinate, and present educational programming for workshops and in-class learning experiences, and work cooperatively with various organizations, K-12 education, and residents within the district to implement this programming.
- Promote and implement natural resource educational opportunities through field trips, tours, in-person and virtual workshops, and displays at local events, which may also include assisting teachers or organizations in arranging specialized speakers for their presentations.
- Identify gaps in programming as it fits the district needs.
- Utilize the Outdoor Classroom when applicable for event, and work with the Seasonal Maintenance Technician to maintain and make necessary repairs of facility.
Outreach Programs
- Develop new programming, and manage existing programs, as district needs are evaluated annually.
- Recruit volunteers to assist with program implementation.
- The management of current programs includes Well Water Testing, Project Learning Tree Arbor Day and NACD Poster Contests, Christmas Tree Recycling event, Adopt-a-Highway, Wyoming Boys School Microgreens and Work & Learn Program. This list is not inclusive to all programming currently offered.
- Works with local committees to develop and implement community events such as Westi Ag Days, Grow Washakie, Full Campaign and the Reduce/Reuse/Recycle Coalition for Hazardous Waste Collection Day, or other local events as the district sees fit.
- Identify and implement methods to reach, engage and grow our constituency following. Engage with and grow our social media following.
- Development and distribution quarterly newsletter, displays, flyers, brochures, targeted mailings, or other collateral materials.
- Create, share, and promote content through social media sites and website, which will include monthly Kid’s Corner content, sharing pertinent agriculture and natural resource information, video content development and production, and various other elements of content.
- Keep a list of community and outreach partnerships. Assist in the outreach efforts with new and existing partners.
- Assist in the planning and hosting of area meetings and legislative meetings.
Tree Program
- Annual seedling tree, weed barrier and compost bin sales.
- Update seedling tree order form and make available through district Newsletter, social media and community outreach.
- Maintain customer spreadsheet for purchases, track inventory and update forms as needed.
- Invoice and collect payment prior to placing order. Track customer orders and provide necessary updates for delivery.
- Place orders with designated vendors, provide District Manager with invoice for the order, along with customer order forms.
- Coordinate and implement the delivery of products with customers.
- Provide customers with care instructions and informational materials to aid in their success with planting.
Water Quality Program
- Assists in developing and implementing water quality programs. This may include water testing, collecting field information, compiling water quality data, and data management.
- Complete certification through WDEQ and WACD for Principles of Water Quality Training and Water Quality Monitoring and Analysis Training. Update certification as required every 4 years.
- Work with local landowners to get access to sampling sites for the water monitoring season.
Additional Duties
- Assist District Manager with programs and administrative responsibilities as needed.
- Submit event reports, complete with participants and photos.
- Accurately reports hours worked, tracking time per project or program. Recording daily activity on timesheet and submitting to District Manager on the last day of each month.
- Create and submit a Plan of Work with budget and updated Education Manual annually. Update plans quarterly, or as needed.
- Identify sources and obtain funding to maintain and further the development of the education program and other programs as directed.
- Complete Annual Report and One Page Summary as part of the WDA Funding Requirements.
- Participate and complete certifications in educational programming, water quality monitoring, District Supervisor & Employee Training, Employee Association Annual Training, ArcGIS, as well as participate in other training and certification programs as District Board of Supervisors and District Manager see fit.
- Attend board meetings on a quarterly basis to provide in-person updates to the board on programming and take minutes when District Manager requires assistance.
- Participate in staff meetings and discuss project accomplishments, timelines and goals and any other topics necessary.
- Provide the District Manager and Board of Supervisors with necessary information for decision-making as required.
- Completes general office duties including records management, running errands and performing other clerical duties as directed.
- Maintain WCCD Inventory list and help ensure all equipment and resources are labeled and maintained.
- Any other duties as assigned, to meet WCCD needs.
DETAILS OF EMPLOYMENT:
This position is a non-exempt, full or part-time, at-will position. The Education & Program Coordinator is an employee of and is responsible to the Washakie County Conservation District (WCCD) Board of Supervisors to achieve common goals and objectives of the district. The Education & Program Coordinator will coordinate and communicate district business through the District Manager, who is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the district and the coordination, organization, and timelines of meeting all District goals. All programs and information developed by the incumbent of this position are the sole property of WCCD.
Performance of each duty in this position will be evaluated against the requirements developed for this position. The District Manager will conduct a performance evaluation annually. This position is an at-will position that exists only under the direction of the WCCD Board of Supervisors. No contract is implied or intended. WCCD may terminate this position at any time. This is a full-time, or part-time non-exempt position. Starting salary will depend upon qualifications and experience and is set by the Board of Supervisors. Benefits are dependent on full or part-time employment status.
