Snowy Range Ski Area Outdoor Emergency Care Information Meeting (2/2)
To become a member of the National Ski Patrol, all candidates must take and pass the Outdoor Emergency Care (OEC) class. Snowy Range Ski Area’s fall OEC course kicks off on September 10.
Mandatory Informational Meetings
If you are interested in patrolling this season, you must attend one of our two upcoming informational meetings. We will cover everything you need to know about the class schedule, expectations, and requirements.
Option 1: Wednesday, August 12th at 6:00 PM
Option 2: Thursday, August 27th at 6:00 PM
Location: Wyoming Game and Fish Department, Laramie Regional Office (1212 S. Adams St.)
What is Outdoor Emergency Care (OEC)?
OEC is the National Ski Patrol’s gold standard for emergency medicine, recognized across the outdoor recreation industry. The course covers more than Wilderness First Responder courses, and you learn how to use more equipment (e.g. oxygen tanks, airway adjuncts, traction splints, other types of splints). The coverage is at levels comparable to Emergency Medical Technician training, with less coverage of urban emergencies and ambulance operations but a greater focus on patient care in cold, austere settings such as a ski mountain or the backcountry.
Course & Patrol Commitment
The skills you gain are incredibly rewarding, but OEC does require a solid commitment. The program includes:
7 Thursday evening classroom sessions
5 full-day field days (held outdoors, focusing on hands-on skill execution)
Independent online coursework
Final examinations (one written test, one practical skills test)
Patrol Requirement: A minimum of 10 scheduled weekend days (Saturdays or Sundays) during the ski season.
Young Adult Patroller (YAP) Program
Do you have a teenager who loves the snow? Anyone aged 15 to 17 can become a Young Adult Patroller! They must complete the same OEC course and testing as adults. If you have an interested teen, please let me know directly. Since they are minors, they will be paired with an adult patroller and I can provide more information on how this works.
