Professional & Applied Experiences

Sustainability minors are not required to complete a professional or applied experience that is related to your degree program. However, we encourage you to engage in as many applied experiences as possible, as they enhance your employability and can help you decide on a career path.

Professional and applied experiences are an opportunity to connect your academic training and future goals. They can include a broad range of opportunities including work, volunteer service, or research. You should seek an experience that provides one of the following outcomes:

  • direct exposure to complex environmental systems or scientific practices
  • practical experience in environmental and natural resource policy, management or decision processes
  • meaningful interaction with professionals in your field of study
  • hands-on experience that directs your career path

Schedule a meeting with a career coordinator to discuss opportunities.

Career opportunities exist in private business like textiles and manufacturing organizations, corporations, and energy companies, educational and research organizations like universities, and labs; non-profits that specialize in food justice, science communication, public engagement, and climate change mitigation and adaptation, and government programs that manage and support sustainability initiatives and research.
