Professional & Applied Experience Requirements
Environmental Systems Science majors are required to complete a professional or applied experience that is related to your degree program. This can include a broad range of opportunities including work, volunteer service, or research. We encourage you to engage in as many applied experiences as possible, as they enhance your employability and can help you decide on a career path.
The professional and applied experience requirement is an opportunity to connect your academic training and future goals. You should seek an experience that provides one of the following outcomes:
- direct exposure to complex environmental systems or scientific practices
- practical experience in environmental and natural resource policy, management or decision processes
- meaningful interaction with professionals in your field of study
- hands-on experience that directs your career path
Schedule a meeting with a career coordinator to discuss opportunities and requirements.

Career opportunities exist in private companies like environmental consulting, reclamation/restoration, and regulatory compliance firms, with educational and research organizations like universities, labs, and K-12 schools, non-profits that specialize in science communication, public engagement, and conservation, and government agencies that manage and support natural resource stewardship and use, recreation and open space planning, and scientific research.
