Professional & Applied Experience Requirements

Environment & Natural Resource majors and minors are required to complete a professional or applied experience that is related to your degree program. This can include a broad range of opportunities including work, volunteer service, or research. We encourage you to engage in as many applied experiences as possible, as they enhance your employability and can help you decide on a career path.

The professional and applied experience requirement is an opportunity to connect your academic training and future goals. You should seek an experience that provides one of the following outcomes:

  • direct exposure to complex environmental systems or scientific practices
  • practical experience in environmental and natural resource policy, management or decision processes
  • meaningful interaction with professionals in your field of study
  • hands-on experience that directs your career path

Schedule a meeting with a career coordinator to discuss opportunities and requirements.

Career opportunities exist in in private companies like environmental consulting, reclamation & restoration, and regulatory compliance firms, in non-profit organizations that specialize in science communication, outreach, or environmental education, with local, state, or federal agencies in conservation, recreation and open space planning, natural resource management, or land-use planning.
